Action invests in growth in Poland

Official opening of first Action distribution centre in Poland

Today, the international non-food discounter Action officially inaugurated its first distribution centre (DC) in Osla, Poland. Action opened its first store in the country two years ago and continues to invest in the future expansion of its business in this market. Currently, there are almost 50 stores, mainly in the south-west of Poland. The opening of DC Osła in the commune of Gromadka in Lower Silesia is a major investment to support store expansion. Earlier this year, Action hired Slawomir Nitek, an experienced Polish retail expert for the role of General Manager and opened its country office in Katowice, to be ready for further growth and development of Action in Poland.

Over the past two years, Action has increased the number of store openings in Poland every year, now amounting to a total of 46 stores by October this year. Before end of 2019, the 50th store will open its doors. As a result, the company employs more than 700 people. With every opening about 15 new employees are added.

“Our strong growth course over the past two years not only proves Action’s scalable business model, but also shows that the Polish people love the Action formula of surprise of a broad, ever-changing offer at lowest possible prices and good quality” explains Sławomir Nitek, who was appointed General Manager in August this year. He strengthens the management team of Action with an extensive experience in Polish retail. Sławomir Nitek is responsible for the operations and development of Action in Poland. “I am convinced of Action’s concept and its success. It is an exciting task to establish the international non-food discounter on the Polish market. We have ambitious plans for our future in Poland and will continue strengthening our Polish organisation and the supply chain”, explains Sławomir Nitek.

First distribution center in Poland

In September, Action’s eighth distribution centre has started its operations in the commune of Gromadka, Poland, and today, on 6th November  the official opening celebration takes place. It is the first distribution centre for Action in Poland and marks an important milestone. As part of Action’s global supply chain network, this DC will supply stores in South-West Poland as well as East Germany. “Osła provides a strategically excellent location with a good infrastructure and convenient connections to major highways. This DC does not only benefit us, but will also contribute to the further development of the commune”, says Sławomir Nitek. In the long-run, the DC will create more than 400 jobs in the region.

“Gromadka provides very good investment conditions. We are pleased that Action has chosen our municipality to locate its first distribution centre in Poland.”, explains Dariusz Pawliszczy, mayor of the commune of Gromadka.

Action and the international construction company Goldbeck developed the DC with special consideration for the environment: “We went for a combination of functionality and sustainability, and included as many environmentally friendly details as possible – from materials used, up to construction details and installed equipment”, explains Sławomir Nitek. Solar panels for the warm-water treatment in the office building, intelligent energy and water meters, water-efficient equipment and LED lights are only some of the features implemented.

The distribution centre is owned by Action. The international logistics provider Fiege will be responsible for the daily operations of the DC.
