Action inaugurates its third distribution centre in France in the Lyon region

Today, Bernard Fialaire, Mayor of Belleville, Sander van der Laan, Chief Executive Officer of Action and Wouter De Backer, General Manager of Action in France, inaugurated the company’s third distribution centre (DC) in France. With this DC located in the Lyon region, Action is taking a new step forward and strengthens its supply chain to live up to its ambitions in France by store expansion. Before the end of 2019, Action plans to open its 500th store in France.

After the opening of the first store in France in 2012, Action now operates 441 stores in the country. This continuous and unparalleled growth has led the company to size its logistics network in France accordingly, which until now has been structured around the Moissy-Cramayel (Paris region) and Labastide-Saint-Pierre DCs (Toulouse region).

For Sander van der Laan, CEO of Action, "France is an important growth market for Action. With this new distribution centre, we will be able to continuously meet the needs of our French customers and support our ambitions in France. The Lyon region is a strategic location for Action to supply existing and new stores in South-East France. In addition, we contribute to the local development and economy: More than 500 jobs will be created for the region," he explains.

The DC was developed together with BARJANE, a responsible property investor in France. In 2019, the building was bought by Savills Investment Management. For the operation, Action has selected Kuehne + Nagel, a leading logistics partner in the distribution sector.

A sustainable approach to environment and communities

In close cooperation, Action and BARJANE developed a state-of-the-art distribution center of 60,000 square meters located in the Technoparc Lybertec, 40 km away from Lyon. The building complex meets high standards of sustainability and was thus certified BREEAM Good. The focus of this project was on landscape integration, energy efficiency, and a high-quality working environment. It is fully equipped with LED lighting, and during heavy rainfall water catching ponds around the building prevent that surrounding areas are flooded. The roof is equipped with a solar power grid, integrating high-efficiency photovoltaic panels, with a capacity of 3.8 MWp. These produce 4000 MWh, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 1600 people.

The new distribution centre fits the Action Social Responsibility strategy which sets the basis for a sustainable approach towards people and environment. It affects all business levels of Action and defines four key areas: product, people, environment and good citizenship.

Throughout the supply chain, the company invests in solutions to save energy, reduce CO2 emissions and create a healthy working environment. The new logistics building in Belleville uses equipment and processes that have been proven successful in other Action DCs. A good example are the iconic Action double-decker trailers, which carry 60% more freight than a standard trailer.

The French market, an important driver of Action’s growth in Europe

Action operates nearly 1,400 stores across Europe and employs more than 45,000 people. With more than 440 stores throughout the country and around 9,000 employees, France is Action's leading market today.

Driven by a sustained annual rate of store openings, Action intends to continue this trend by opening its 500th store in France before the end of the year 2019.

Sander van der Laan, CEO of Action, "We are committed to continuing to invest in opening new stores and strengthening our distribution capabilities in France."

Action now operates seven distribution centers in Europe and three more are planned to open before the end of 2020. This includes the development of Action’s fourth distribution centre in France in Verrières-en-Anjou. With these strengthened capacities, France will be at the heart of the group's distribution and logistics operations.
